Current State and Future Prospects

Transportation Sector in Iraq

The transportation sector in Iraq has faced numerous challenges, including years of conflict, underfunded infrastructure, and a growing demand for modernization. However, there are also substantial opportunities to transform this sector into a key driver of economic growth and connectivity, both regionally and domestically.

Iraq's transportation sector is at a crossroads, facing considerable challenges but also showing promise for growth and development. With focused investment, strategic partnerships, and adherence to international standards, Iraq can transform its transportation infrastructure, fostering economic progress, improving safety, and connecting communities across the country and the region.

Road Infrastructure

Handling approximately 90% of the country’s freight and passenger movement. The Government has outlined initiatives to upgrade highways to meet international standards.

With a focus on new construction and rehabilitation, Iraq is poised to establish a road system capable of supporting robust commercial and passenger traffic promising safer, more efficient transport routes.

Public Transportation

Cities like Baghdad, home to nearly 11 million people, lack organized mass transit systems, leading to heavy traffic congestion. The government has introduced initiatives to develop mass transit options for a rapid transit system in major cities.

Partnerships with international companies could lead to the establishment of modernized, efficient urban transportation networks.

Traffic and Road Safety

Road safety in Iraq remains a significant concern, with a traffic fatality rate of around 20.2 per 100,000 people, one of the highest in the region.

Iraq is making plans to implement international safety regulations and expand driver training programs. There are also initiatives to increase law enforcement and improve traffic monitoring, which, along with road upgrades, are expected to enhance safety across the network.

Rail Infrastructure

Iraq’s rail network spans approximately 2,000 kilometers, although much of it requires modernization and expansion. Currently, only a small portion of the railway is operational.

The government has prioritized projects to extend and modernize the rail system, aiming to connect Basra to Turkey and Iran, which could serve as a critical trade route. By working with international firms and securing foreign investment, Iraq is setting the groundwork for a more connected rail network.

Air Transport

A growing sector in Iraq, with Baghdad International Airport as the busiest, handling over 4 million passengers annually.

Investment in airport infrastructure is expected to increase air traffic capacity and enhance passenger experience. New projects at Baghdad International Airport and other major airports are aimed at upgrading facilities and expanding runways. With international cooperation, Iraq is working towards an improved air transport network that can boost tourism, ease domestic travel, and support economic growth.

Maritime Transport

The Port of Umm Qasr, handles most of Iraq’s imports and exports, managing over 1 million TEUs annually.

Iraq is investing heavily in expanding and modernizing the Port of Umm Qasr to facilitate trade and support the economy. The government has initiated new partnerships to further develop the port's capacity and improve logistics efficiency. As Iraq continues to modernize its ports, the maritime sector is poised to become a significant player in regional trade, supporting Iraq’s oil exports and diversifying its economy.
